Well done to Tim Marshall who recently passed his PhD viva and graduated.Tim’s PhD thesis was on radionuclide speciation during (abiotic) alterations of iron rich minerals in the chemically disturbed zone around a geological disposal facility. His examiners were Prof Richard Pattrick and Dr Caroline Peacock.

I asked Tim…

What were the highlights of your PhD?

Synchrotron visits to Diamond and anka, conferences like Goldschimdt in Montreal, Actinides in Karlsruhe and Migration in Brighton and my talisman secondment to KIT-INE.

Would you like to share a  memorable moment with us?

Presenting my Technetium paper at Migration, it was terrifying given the audience which was a who’s who of the nuclear academia and industry, but it was exciting to have that platform to be able to get such great exposure for my research.

Any tips on how to ace your viva?

Publish! And don’t be afraid to acknowledge where you don’t know the answer, nobody knows everything.


What are you doing now?

I’m working for the Office for Nuclear Regulation as a safety regulator specialising in radioactive waste and land quality. I’m loving it so far, combining my technical capabilities with the in house legal training to asses safety at nuclear licensed sites.
