Hi! My name is Anna and I grew up in The Netherlands before moving to Norwich. I came to the University of Manchester to study Chemistry and completed my Masters degree in 2018. I became really interested in radiochemistry and got the opportunity to work with the National Nuclear Laboratory on a Royal Society summer project looking into the modelling of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (or LIBS for short). This pretty much lead the way to my PhD project!

I am now looking into how the LIBS process interacts with the sample and assessing its ability as a characterisation technique for the nuclear industry. I’ll be using LIBS to analyse various radionuclide contaminants and organic complexes on materials like steel, plastic and concrete.

Outside of my research, I’m usually exploring new areas of Manchester with friends or playing sport. I started playing a Dutch sport called Korfball when I first came to uni and have since joined a new club called Manchester Warriors. It’s basically mixed-sex netball/basketball and, even though it sounds it, it’s definitely not made up!

I can’t say I know enough about minerals to have a favourite one yet, but cobalt is definitely my favourite element. It forms many brightly coloured compounds and can reversibly change from pink to blue in solution!
