Hi, I’ve lived near Manchester all my life and completed my MChem degree at UoM. My fourth year project was based on novel metal-organic frameworks under the supervision of Dr. Martin Attfield. In my chemistry degree I developed a real flair for radiochemistry and surface science so when a PhD came up for studying radionuclides adsorbing on to iron surfaces I jumped at the opportunity.
My PhD will focus on Sellafield’s Enhanced Actinide Removal Plant (EARP) studying the formation of iron (oxy)hydroxides and uptake of different nuclides relevant to Sellafield’s decommissioning programme.
Out of the office I’m a passionate horse rider, a love I developed just before coming to university. I both ride out on hacks and compete in dressage and showjumping.
My favourite mineral is quartz because of its use in atomic force microscopes as a cantilever and its use in piezoelectric components. Quartz is also a great scrabble scorer (24).
