I was born in Lewisham (London) a long time ago, but have lived all over the UK. Generally I pretend I’m from Manchester these days. I studied Earth Sciences at Manchester and after two years in the ether I came back to do a PhD investigating the geomicrobiology, geochemistry and mineralogy of lateritic cobalt bearing manganese oxides.
Now I’m working on recovering copper from whisky distillery waste using biogenic magnetite nanoparticles. These are formed using Geobacter sulfurreducens, a dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria that loves respiring using iron, or at least uses it when there are no other metabolic sources.
Outside of work I like walking, climbing, painting, drawing, drinking, thinking, watching horror films and tutting at the news.
My favourite mineral is cummingtonite, a metamorphic Mg-bearing monoclinic amphibole.
