New PhD Student: Christopher Egan Morriss

chris

Hi I’m Chris, I’m from Loughborough and I’ve been in Manchester for the past 4 years studying my MEng in Materials Science and Engineering with Biomaterials. I did my masters placement at the Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research in Harrow, where I worked on projects using stem cells for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering applications in the skin and liver. I focused on characterising stem cells in wound healing in the skin and organogenesis processes in liver organoid units, using immunostaining and imaging techniques. I love biomaterials and stem cells research but I wanted to work in areas with more environmental based applications, which led me here.

My PhD is an iCASE project with looking at using metal-reducing bacteria to produce metal nanoparticles for use as catalysts. My work will begin looking at palladium nanoparticle production, its scalability and also advancing into bimetallic nanoparticles.

In my spare time I like to travel, climb, play football, listen to music and podcasts and play guitar. I also love to cook and my falafel skills are top notch.

I don’t know many types of minerals to be honest so I’m open to suggestions for a new favourite.

New Ph.D. student: Raphael Margreiter

Guten Tag, as we say in Germany. I’m Raphael and I am, you guessed it, from Germany. I did my Bachelor and Master of Science in the Chemistry Department of the University of Cologne. That’s the city I always thought was famous for its gothic cathedral, but seems to be better known in the UK […]
