Hi, I’m Luke and I’m from Chorley in Lancashire. I finished my PhD in the Manchester Geomicro Group in 2019 and immediately started an EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship in the group to continue my research career. For a bit of background, I did my undergraduate MChem degree at the University of Manchester, studying Chemistry with Industrial Experience. My PhD was entitled ‘Long-term fate of radionuclides during sulfidation’ and involved the study of how sulfide impacts the environmental speciation and fate of uranium associated with various different iron (oxyhydr)oxide phases. The work had implications towards broadening the understanding of uranium mobility in geological disposal facilities and contaminated land scenarios. Following this, I built a fellowship proposal around similar areas of research and I now plan to take my PhD experience to investigate the impacts of sulfidation on neptunium containing systems.
In my free time I enjoy running, football, music, travelling, and games. At the weekend, I can usually be found watching my local team, West Didsbury & Chorlton FC, or running around Chorlton and Sale water parks.
After my experience with various mineral phases during my PhD, I’ve revised my favourite mineral selection and I now believe ferrihydrite has taken up the mantle. I’ve chosen ferrihydrite because it’s easy to make and it’s great for sorbing actinides to.
