Hi, I’m Franky and I’m from Bristol. I graduated from the University of Manchester with a Masters in Chemistry with International Study. For my year abroad I went to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio and had a great time watching sports, taking road trips and playing beer pong (some studying too). My Masters project was on mesoionic carbene complexes of the f and d-block but I got tempted over to do a nuclear environmental PhD at the SEES school as it’s really applied, multidisciplinary and interesting!
My PhD project is on elemental and modelling approaches to support the management of radioactive discharge pipelines, so looking at the pipes that transfer our treated nuclear waste to the Irish Sea (yep they’re allowed to do that, it’s safe). Solid build ups have been detected on the pipes which reduce their diameter, in turn reducing the flow rate and efficiency. I will be investigating the pipes and these solids at sites like Sellafield and Winfrith.
In my free time I like to get out and explore Manchester with friends going to bars, restaurant and galleries (my favourite is the Whitworth). I cycle everywhere and love to play netball (a rite of passage when you’re lanky). I love to get outdoors and go on walking weekends and travelling in general. I also love dogs.
I don’t have a favourite mineral yet but my favourite element is bismuth because frozen bismuth is really cool, google it!
