I am from a village in rural Aberdeenshire in the Northeast of Scotland. In 2017, I completed my MChem at the University of Aberdeen and spent my final year project at a research institute in Iceland investigating arsenic compounds in seaweed. After graduating, I worked as a hazardous waste chemist supporting the offshore oil and gas industry. After 3 years, I had developed a strong interest in nuclear waste and grown nostalgic for research. Some months later, I made the journey south to take up a PhD at Manchester.
My PhD will focus on understanding the nature of radioactive contaminants in the interface between buried concrete structures and the environment, with an eye on in-situ disposal.
In my own time I enjoy hiking and walking, having tackled the Scottish hills for a few years I am excited to explore the national parks around the North of England. Elsewise I enjoy country & folk music, play chess (poorly) and am teaching myself to play guitar.
I’m not a mineral guy so it’s hard to pick a favourite, but I think pallasite meteorites look very cool, so maybe olivine?
