From 2015-2019 I studied at Manchester for an MEarthSci in Geology with Planetary science, where my academic interests led me to do a fourth-year project investigating strontium and caesium in groundwater.
My research involves observing the geomicrobiological activity in ‘near field systems’ in a GFD (geological disposal facility), more specifically how bentonites (used for buffer and backfill) behave in a deep repository setting, and how microbes interact with and influence the corrosion of waste cannisters and performance of the bentonite backfill.
I play the drums, and I enjoy the outdoors (mainly climbing and running). After graduating I took a year to “pursue personal interests”, working full time as a climbing instructor and route setter (coaching and screwing holds on walls), but mainly just spending all my time out in dingy little limestone caves anywhere between 1 and 30m off the ground. I’m fuelled almost exclusively by Aldi bake-at-home baguettes.
My favourite mineral would have to be smectite since I seem to spend so much time reading about it… but could equally be calcite since I spend so much time touching it (see below)…
